When Should I Replace My Artificial Turf?

Back in 1965, the world changed when Astroturf was invented. No longer did you have to tend to live grass; instead, you could get a fresh, green lawn all year long that required little to no maintenance.

Today, artificial turf is still widely popular and is used in both residential and commercial applications. Maybe you have some artificial turf yourself!

However, nothing lasts forever, even if you go with top-notch quality products. Eventually, you must replace your synthetic turf.

But how do you know exactly when this is?

To help you out, here are some signs you need to replace your artificial turf.

You’ve Had It for More Than a Decade

Most synthetic turf manufacturers will offer warranties of around 8 years. That’s not to say that your lawn will degrade rapidly after 8 years, but you may notice it’s not what it used to be.

If you can make it over the 10-year mark with your original turf, then you’ll really notice the difference. Even if you clean and maintain it properly, it’s still bound to show some wear and tear after a decade of usage.

Now, we’re not saying you need to replace it straight away at the 10-year mark. However, you’ll want to examine it every year after that, since it’ll probably deteriorate much quicker after a decade.

Your Synthetic Turf Is Heavily Damaged

Yes, your synthetic turf will get damaged throughout the years. This is especially true if you have kids and pets who love spending time on the lawn.

However, most of the damage by them won’t be too noticeable, which means you can get away with not replacing the turf for a while.

But let’s say your husband had one beer too many on July 4th and dropped burning coal from the barbecue onto the turf. Now that the patch is not only melted but also discolored.

In small cases like these, you can usually get the damaged part cut out and replaced. But if you have several patches that are damaged and/or discolored, it may be more time and cost-efficient to just replace the whole thing.

There Are Loose Inlays

Inlays can add some interesting designs and color to your artificial turf. Or, if you have this turf for an athletic field, then inlays are used to mark the proper lines.

Whatever the case, you have inlays on your synthetic turf and they’re starting to come loose. Not only does this look messy, but it can also pose a safety hazard if you’re using your turf for athletic reasons. When they walk or run over it, they might trip.

If you’ve already had these inlays repaired multiple times, then it may be time to retire the turf and get a new one. While you can certainly try and keep repairing the inlays, they’ll just wear out quicker and eventually, you must get a replacement, anyway.

The Infill Is Spread to the Sides

All artificial turf will need infill to help the artificial grass blades look more realistic. Over time, the infill may get spread out to the sides, especially if you get a lot of foot traffic. This can cause the turf in the inner parts to look more caved in and the blades may look like they need perking up.

You can prevent this from happening and even fix it a little with proper maintenance and grooming of the synthetic turf. However, if it’s too late for that and you’ve already tried that, then you’ll need to replace the entire thing.

Your Tastes Have Changed

This may seem like a weird reason to get your artificial turf changed; it’s just a green lawn, after all.

However, there are nuances to synthetic grass that can be tweaked so it better suits your modern tastes. It’s comparable to eyebrow styles over the years; trends sometimes see thicker eyebrows as popular, sometimes thin, and sometimes light, other times dark. These aesthetics may be subtly different from one another, but you can easily tell when one’s out of style.

If you feel like your artificial turf is looking outdated and/or your tastes have changed, it’s always a good idea to get it changed. There are plenty of professionals who can help you decide what the new shade and style of your lawn should be.

You’re Selling Your House

When you’re prepping your house for a sale, you want to ensure everything’s as pristine as it can be. Perhaps you give the inside and outside fresh coats of paint, install new carpeting, and renovate your kitchen.

You need to give the outside of your house some love too. It’s what people see first.

If your synthetic turf is looking like it needs new life breathed into it, then you should do it. It may not seem like a big deal, but you’ll realize what a big difference it makes once you get it done.

Remember: first impressions only take a few seconds to form, and you want to wow potential buyers when they come to see your property. A fresh lawn can make a world of difference.
